On the Palmetto Dunes side of US 278, the fall calendar runs about two weeks. From October 8 to October 23, Shelter Cove and the resort have a final concert series, the opening of the island's biggest arts season, a statewide Special Olympics tournament, a wine dinner, a kids' rooftop concert and a pumpkin patch. After that the schedule changes. Four villa neighborhoods inside the gates have renovation projects that run this fall and winter, most of them starting in November and wrapping up in March or April 2027.
If you own here, those two schedules make one plan for the season. October is when everything is open. The winter project list tells you which buildings will have scaffolding, closed decks or no elevator while it's quiet.
The busiest stretch, day by day
Here is the October lineup that's posted now, in order. Several nights have more than one event.
- Thursday, October 8. Music & Taste on the Harbour, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Neptune Statue, with Deas Guyz. Memory Lane Portraits also holds its 25th-anniversary open house and Chamber ribbon cutting that day from noon to 2 p.m. at 9 Harbourside Lane, Unit A.
- Friday, October 9. Crescendo starts. This is the island's 10th annual arts and culture season, and it lists more than 100 events through November 22.
- Wednesday, October 14. The Crescendo kickoff at Shelter Cove Community Park, with jazz artist Mark Rapp and the Soda City Band headlining. That same evening, the resort's new PPT Pickleball Partner Therapy session runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
- Thursday, October 15. The last listed Music & Taste night, again with Deas Guyz. It's also the first day of the Special Olympics South Carolina Pickleball Invitational at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis & Pickleball Center and the night of the Aperture Cellars wine dinner at Alexander's.
- Friday, October 16. The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra's "Symphony Under the Stars," featuring Etienne Charles and René Marie, is part of Crescendo's first week.
- Wednesday, October 21. Concert for the Kids, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Poseidon Rooftop, 38 Shelter Cove Lane, featuring Pretty Darn.
- Friday, October 23. A free Pumpkin Patch at Shelter Cove Community Park from 4 to 7 p.m., with a costume contest at 5:45. Bounce houses, pumpkins and games are free. Some rides and concessions cost extra. The free Crescendo Songwriter Show with Eric Reid & The Hebron Road Ramblers is the same night.
Pickleball players have a conflict on October 14. The PPT session and the Crescendo kickoff start at 5 p.m. on the same evening. The kickoff's end time also varies by source. The Town's announcement says 5 to 7 p.m. The Shelter Cove Community Park calendar says 5 to 6 p.m. Plan for the shorter window if you want to catch the headliners.
Music & Taste closes out its season on October 15
Music & Taste is the series that fills the harbour on Thursday nights, so its last date matters for the rest of the season. Shelter Cove Harbour restaurants set up around the Neptune Statue with specially priced light appetizers, wine and beer. Admission is free, and organizers ask guests to bring a canned good for the Deep Well Project. Seating is limited, so bring your own chairs. Coolers and outside food and drinks aren't allowed. The series is pet-friendly and depends on the weather.
On October 15, the last Music & Taste night overlaps with day one of the Special Olympics tournament and the Alexander's wine dinner. All three are on the Palmetto Dunes side of the highway.
The pickleball center's third straight October with Special Olympics
The 2026 Pickleball Invitational is the third year in a row that Special Olympics pickleball has come to the Palmetto Dunes courts in mid-October. In 2024, a local event listing recorded the South Carolina Special Olympics North America Pickleball Championship there on October 17–19. In 2025, Special Olympics South Carolina's SONA Tennis & Pickleball Championship, held October 16–18, assigned its pickleball play to Palmetto Dunes. This year's Invitational runs October 15–17.
The format offers Levels 3 and 4 doubles and Unified Doubles, and athletes can enter one or both. The published schedule covers more than matches. It includes pro clinics for athletes, an opening ceremony with a dinner and dance, a pro exhibition and an awards event.
The resort's October newsletter asks for volunteers. The event page doesn't list volunteer roles or say whether spectators can attend. Questions go to Kelly Garrick at [email protected]. Special Olympics South Carolina also has a general volunteer portal for one-day events.
The resort's new winter pickleball schedule lists two daily round robins, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and adds the Wednesday PPT sessions on October 14, 21 and 28.
New tenants, an anniversary and a closing at the harbour
The harbour shops are also changing this fall. Shelter Cove's September update lists Luxury Nails as a new tenant at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina, offering manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements and custom nail art. The phone number is 843-505-2969.
Tradewinds Trinkets and Treasures announced Sunday, September 27 as its final day after 38 years, with a closing sale. The post doesn't confirm the store closed on that date, so stop by or call before you assume it's gone.
Memory Lane Portraits is offering Palmetto Dunes owners and guests a $125 artwork credit on portrait sessions held in October, along with its October 8 ribbon cutting.
Four villa neighborhoods go to the contractors this winter
The resort's neighborhood projects page lists work in four villa neighborhoods this winter. Each date window is marked as subject to change.
| Neighborhood | Project | Posted window | What changes on site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windsor Place | Elevator replacement | November 2026 to March 2027 | Elevator out of service for the whole project, with contractors on site and possible daytime noise |
| Barrington Arms | Exterior renovations and walkway refinishing | November 2026 to late March 2027 | Scaffolding at various times and walkways refinished on all five floors, with no set schedule for each phase |
| The Moorings | Deck renovation, Building 1 through Building 12 | November 2026 to April 2027, tentative | Weekday work only, about two weeks per building, and decks may be closed at the building being worked on |
| Barrington Court | Elevator modernization | Fall 2026 to March 2027 | Prep work this fall that won't affect the elevator, then a full outage starting in January 2027 |
The Moorings schedule shows how long this runs. Twelve buildings at about two weeks each comes to roughly 24 weeks if every building stays on pace, which takes the work through the April end date. The resort says the two-week estimate could change once work starts. Because work happens Monday through Friday only, weekends at The Moorings should be quieter than weekdays.
Barrington Court's timeline has the most detail. The elevator is expected to be out for about four to six weeks starting in January 2027. Another one to two weeks of testing is expected in mid-to-late February, and the elevator should be back in service by March. The resort says the current elevator is safe to use and will get extra maintenance before the project starts. Owners with guests booked in those weeks can reach the resort's confirmations team at (800) 827-3006.
What's still on the calendar after October
Crescendo continues after the October rush. "Primary Trust" runs at Lean Ensemble Theater from October 30 to November 8, and the Hilton Head Island Lantern Parade is Saturday, November 14. The season ends November 22.
At Alexander's, the last wine dinner of 2026 is Thursday, November 19, featuring Beni di Batasiolo Piemonte. The restaurant's prix fixe Thanksgiving meal is $75 per adult and $28 for a children's turkey dinner with dessert for kids under 12. Both prices include tax and gratuity. Big Jim's offers dine-in and to-go family packages for the holiday.
On the water, Aloha pontoon rentals at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina are 10% off when you book at least 20 days ahead with code BOOKAHEAD, for rentals through December 31, 2026. Counting from today, October 3, the earliest rental date that qualifies is about October 23.
Shelter Cove's Holiday Lights page lists a November 24 to January 4 display, and the Santa page describes a visit at the Neptune Statue the day after Thanksgiving. Neither page gives a year, so treat those dates as unconfirmed for 2026.
For the drive, the Town's US 278 corridor project page says eastbound bridge replacement is expected to start in early 2028, pending FHWA approval. No bridge work is scheduled for this fall. For more on the community, see Kelly's Palmetto Dunes neighborhood page, and for the summer version of this calendar, read The Palmetto Dunes Summer That Actually Starts Across the Highway.
If you own at Windsor Place, Barrington Arms, The Moorings or Barrington Court, these project dates may affect your winter rental bookings or the timing of a sale.
